Samantha and Wes celebrated an intimate summer wedding at The Ranch in Carleton Place, Ontario, surrounded by their closest family and friends.
The day was intimate, relaxed, and beautifully understated. Rain moved the ceremony indoors, creating a warm and cozy setting for the vows. By the time the ceremony ended, the rain had passed, allowing us to step outside for portraits around the property.
What followed was a quiet summer evening filled with family, laughter, and meaningful moments that felt entirely their own.
Before the Ceremony
There was no traditional getting-ready coverage that morning.
Instead, I arrived shortly before the ceremony and photographed Samantha spending time with her family inside the fully prepared reception space.
The room was already decorated, but still quiet before the guests settled in. It created a beautiful contrast — everything ready for the celebration, with just a few calm moments left before the day truly began.
These are often the moments I love most: unhurried, natural, and completely unplanned.
An Intimate Indoor Ceremony
With rain outside, the ceremony was moved into the main building at The Ranch.
The change in plans gave the ceremony a particularly intimate feeling. Family and friends gathered close together while Samantha and Wes exchanged their vows, surrounded by the people who mattered most.
While I always photograph the key moments of a ceremony, I’m equally drawn to everything happening around them — a parent’s expression, children watching from nearby, a quiet glance between the couple.
Those subtle reactions are often what make the photographs feel personal years later.
Portraits After the Rain
Almost perfectly timed, the rain stopped as the ceremony came to an end.
We stepped outside and photographed around the immediate grounds of The Ranch, using the staircase, arch, surrounding architecture, and the small pond.
Because the field was still wet, we chose to stay closer to the venue rather than walk farther out onto the property.
It was a good reminder that beautiful portraits don’t always require a long list of locations. The area surrounding the main building offered more than enough variety, while keeping the experience relaxed and effortless for the couple.
A Quiet Evening
After portraits, the celebration continued inside with dinner and time together as a family.
Later in the evening, Samantha and Wes chose to share their dance away from the larger reception.
Only their parents, children, and I remained in the room.
While the children ran, played, and laughed around them, Samantha and Wes had a few minutes simply to be together.
There was no audience and no sense of performance. It was quiet, imperfect in the best way, and completely personal.
Those are the moments I’m always looking for on a wedding day — the ones that feel less like part of a schedule and more like a memory already happening.

A Venue That Works With Changing Weather
Rain doesn’t necessarily mean losing the visual feel of the day.
For Samantha and Wes, moving the ceremony indoors allowed everything to continue comfortably, while the break in the weather afterward gave us plenty of time for outdoor portraits.
For weddings here, I recommend keeping the photography timeline flexible enough to respond to the weather rather than trying to plan around every possible forecast.
Portrait Locations Are Close Together
One of the practical advantages of The Ranch is that several portrait options are located within a short distance of one another.
The staircase, arch, pond, and areas immediately surrounding the building can all create distinctly different photographs without asking the couple to spend a large part of their wedding day walking or travelling between locations.
This becomes especially useful after rain, when the fields may be too wet to comfortably use.
Allow 30–45 Minutes for Portraits
For family photographs and couple portraits, I would ideally leave around 30–45 minutes after the ceremony.
It creates enough space to photograph everything without rushing, while still allowing the couple to return to their guests and enjoy the reception.
If the weather is unpredictable, that small amount of flexibility becomes even more valuable.
